Bagwell Family CrestThe English surname Bagwell, also found in Ireland, is of uncertain origin. It may  a variant of Backwell, a habitational name from Backwell in Somerset, named with Old English bæc ‘ridge’ + wella ‘spring’, ‘stream’, or possibly from Bakewell in Derbyshire (see Bakewell). Alternatively, it may be from a minor place named with an unattested Old English word, bagga ‘ badger’ + wella ‘spring’, ‘stream’. Early written records of the name Bagwell include Edward Backwell, a witness at the famous church of St Dunstans in the East, Stepney, on March 21st 1575, Alse Bagwell who married Francis Drins at St Lawrence Pountney, on May 18th 1624, and Sarah Begwell who married John Ferguson at St Giles Cripplegate on February 3rd 1776, both the latter recordings being in the city of London.
