The Irish surname Bourke is one of the great Anglo-Norman families, coming to Ireland in the person of William de Burgo in 1171. The name de Burgo became Hibernicized to Bourke. The Bourke family  produced many septs (clans) including  MacHugo, MacGibbon, and  MacRedmond .They settled extensively in the western Irish province of Connacht, although families are also found in Cork and Tipperary. Amongst the many interesting name holders was Edmund Bourke the Danish statesman.
