Often it is an occupational name for a distiller of spirits; it may also refer to a charcoal or lime burner or to someone who cleared forests by burning. The name is first recorded in Basel, Switzerland in the 16th Century. Hans Casper Brenner arrived in Pennsylvania from Bremen, Germany in 1733.
