Cantey family crest
The Irish surname Cantey, originally from west Cork, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó an Cháintighe meaning “descendant of the satirist,”fromcáinteach meaning ‘satirical,” later shortened to Ó Cáinte. The Cantey’s were a family of poets from the area around Kilnalmeaky county Cork. The family spread  to the neighboring counties of Limerick and Kerry, where the name is now mainly found.  Today there are approximately 1,200 bearers of the name Cantey living in the United States.
