The Irish surname De Burgh is one of the great Anglo-Norman families, coming to Ireland in the person of William de Burgo in 1171. The name de Burgo became Hibernicized to Burke. The family produced many septs (clans) including MacHugo, MacGibbon, and MacRedmond .They settled extensively in the western Irish province of Connaught, although families are also found in Cork and Tipperary.Amongst the many interesting name holders was Hubert de Burgh (1160-1243) the first Earl of Kent who was one of the most influential men in England during the reigns of kings John and Henry III.
