The Scottish surname Deans, also found in Ireland and England, is a topographic name from the term dene meaning “valley,” or a habitational name from Den in Aberdeenshire or Dean in Ayrshire. The first recorded reference is in the Domesday Richard Deans arrived in Virginia from Scotland in 1762 and is the first recorded reference to the name in the New World. Today there are approximately 4,000 bearers of the name Deans living in the United States.
