The name is derived from the townland of  Irvine in Ayrshire, Scotland or Irving in Dumfriesshire, both of which are named from a Celtic river, ir,or  yr  meaning “green or fresh” and  afon  meaning ”water.”  The name is first recorded in Dumfriesshire where according to family lore they descend from Duncan " the first of Eryvine " killed at the battle of  of Duncrub in 965.  Today there are approximately 500 bearers of the name Ervine in the United States.
