Higginbottom family crestThe English surname Higginbottom, found in Lancashire and Yorkshire, is an habitational name from a place in Lancashire now known as Oakenbottom. It is composed of the Old English elements cen or acen meaning “oaken” and  botme   meaning “broad valley.”  During the Middle Ages this name became successively Eakenbottom and Ickenbottom, the first element becoming associated with the dialect word hicken or higgen ‘mountain ash’ or the personal name Higgin. The name is recorded in the New World as early as the 17th Century when John Higginbotham arrived in Barbados in 1680. Henry Higginbotham, aged 25 years, arrived at Ellis Island, New York from Macclesfield England in 1896.
