The German surname Krieger, also found I Switzerland and Holland,  is an occupational name for a mercenary soldier, Middle High German krieger (possibly from Late Latin (miles) gregarius ‘common soldier’, from grex ‘herd’,‘flock’, ‘crowd’). The name is first recorded in Silesia in the 13th Century, and the first reference to the name in the NewWorld was in 1660 when Franz Krieger emigrated fom Germany to New York City. A notable bearer of the name was the 17th Century German baroque composer Adam Krieger.
