The Scottish surname Mackintosh is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac an Toisich meaning “son of the chief.” There were two original families of this name, one in Perthshire and one in Inverness. The name is first recorded in Scotland in the late 14th Century. The first record of the name in the New World is in 1716 when Alexander McIntosh arrived in Maryland. Today there are approximately 1,000 bearers of the name Mackintosh living in the US.
