The personal name Domhnal is composed of the ancient Celtic elements domno meaning “world” and  val meaning “might, or rule.” In Ireland the name is found mostly in the eastern province of Leinster with high concentrations in counties Louth and Westmeath. The name or a variant is first recorded in the United States in 1711 when Darby McDaniel arrived in Virginia.
