The Scottish surname McGarry, also found in Ireland, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name  Mac Fhearadhaigh meaning “son of Fhearadhach,” a personal name meaning “manly, or brave.” Records of the name include Mary McGarry, christened at Downpatrick, County Down on July 8th 1779, and Mary McGarry, who was a passenger on the ship' Marmion of Liverpool' which sailed from Belfast to New York on May 25th 1846, during the 'Great Famine' of 1846-1848.
