Ireland. Earliest references to the name in Scotland date to the 17th Century and include John McGowen who married Marian Wilson in Edinburgh on July 21st 1636, whilst John MaGowen who married Mary Smith on July 2nd 1704 at St. James church, Clerkenwell.
