The surname is also fairly common in Ireland, in County Galway, having been taken to Connaught in the early 17th century. The name is first recorded in 1166 when Geoffrey de la Rigge was registered in the Hampshire Pipe Rolls. Today there are approximately 7,000 bearers of the name Ridge in the United States.
