URQUHART FAMILY CREST

URQUHART CLAN CREST

The Scottish surname Urquhart is an habitational name from any of four places so called. One in Fife is found in old records (1128) as Pettnaurcha, a Pictish-Gaelic name meaning ‘the portion of the shot’. Others, including one on Loch Ness, are named with Welsh ar meaning “on, or by” and cardden meaning “thicket.” Urquhart is a Highland Scottish clan. They traditionally occupied the lands in the district and town of Cromarty, a former Royal Burgh with an excellent natural harbor on the tip of The Black Isle. Chiefs of the Clan were Barons and hereditary Sheriffs of the county for hundreds of years.
