Heraldry Symbol Angel

Heraldry symbol Angel
In heraldry, the angel is a powerful symbol of divine protection, purity, guidance, and spiritual authority, often used to express a close association with faith, virtue, or heavenly favour. It appears in coats of arms to suggest devotion, moral guardianship, and the triumph of good over adversity, and may also reflect ecclesiastical office, religious patronage, or a family’s desire to emphasize piety and honourable conduct.
Angels are especially prominent in the heraldry of churches, bishops, cathedral cities, and institutions with Christian foundations, and they also appear as supporters or crests in some noble and civic arms. A well-known example is the angel supporters in the arms of the Marquess of Winchester, while angelic figures also appear in the civic heraldry of places with strong religious or historic identities. In visual terms, the angel brings grace and dignity to a coat of arms, whether shown standing, kneeling, or in flight, and its presence often gives the achievement a more elevated and ceremonial character. Even beyond specific examples, the angel remains one of heraldry’s clearest expressions of sacred purpose, protection, and the link between earthly duty and higher ideals.
