MCLEAN CLAN CREST |
The Scottish surname McLean, also found in Ireland, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac Gille Eathain, a patronymic from a personal name meaning “servant of (Saint) John.” The McLean family were chieftains in several islands of the Inner Hebrides. The clan is descended from Eachan Reaganach, who was given the lands of Lochbuie by John 1st Lord of the Isles, in the 14th Century. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1685 when Andrew McLean arrived in New Jersey. Today there are approximately 41,000 bearers of the name McLean living in the US.
