The personal name Atkin was a medieval pet form of Adam which is the generic Hebrew term for ‘man’, probably from Hebrew adama ‘earth’. The first written reference to the name in Britain is in 1387 when John Atkynsoun, is recorded in the  "Records of North Berwick", Scotland. John Atkinson, aged 24 yrs., who embarked from London on the ship "Bonaventure", bound for Virginia, on Janaury 15th 1634.
