Bains Family CrestThe Scottish and northern English surname Bains is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac a’ Ghille Bhàin meaning “son of the pale or white-haired lad.” The name in Scotland is first recorded in Aberdeenshire in the 13th Century. The Bains moved from Aberdeenshire to Inverness where they were sod bearers to the Chiefs of the great Clan Chattan. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1774 when Alexander Bain arrived in Maryland. Today there are approximately 2500 bearers of the surname Bains living in the US.
