Boyle Family Crest

Boyle Family CrestThe Irish surname Boyle, also found in Scotland, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Baoithghill meaning “descendant of Baoithgheall,” a personal deriving from the Gaelic terms baoth meaning “rash” and  geall meaning ‘pledge.” The O' Boyles were a strong clan in County Donegal in the northern province of Ulster for many centuries, and were known for their ruddy complexion. The name is recorded first in the New World in Virginia in 1622, today there are approximately 40,000 bearers of the name Boyle living in the U.S.  Notable bearers of the surname Boyle include the 17th Century Irish Physicist and Inventor Robert Boyle.
