Brewer Family Crest
The English surname Brewer, also found in Germany, is an occupational name for a brewer of beer or ale, from an agent derivative of the Old English term breowan meaning “to brew.” The name may also be of Norman French origin, being an anglicized form of the French name Bruyère , an habitational name from a place so called in Calvados, France. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Ralph de Brueria, which was dated 1086, in the Domesday Book of Devonshire. Daniel Brewer, of Dartmouth, Devonshire, was an early emigrant to the New World colonies, leaving Dartmouth in June 1632 for New England. Today there are approximately 100,000 bearers of the name Brewer in the US today.
