Bromley Family Crest
The English surname Bromley is an habitational name from any of the many places called Bromley, in Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent, Greater Manchester, Staffordshire, and elsewhere. Most are named with Old English brom ‘broom’ + leah ‘woodland clearing’, but Bromley (near Bow) in Greater London is from Old English bræmbel ‘bramble’ + leah. The first reference to the name is Hubert de Brumle, who was registered in the Staffordshire Chartularly rolls in 1194. Sir John Bromley was granted a Coat of Arms by King Edward IV in 1461.
