Burns Family Crest

The Scottish and Irish surname Burns has two distinct origins. When found in Scotland it is a topographic name for someone who lived by a stream or streams, from the Middle English nominative plural or genitive singular of bun. In Ireland the surname Burns is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Broin meaning ‘descendant of Bran’, a personal name based on the Gaelic word bran meaning “raven.” On June 5th 1608, Bessie Burnes married Charles Bryson in Edinburgh, Midlothian, and on September 28th 1760, Gilbert, son of William and Agnes Burness was christened at Alloway, Ayr. Today there are approximately 162,000 people living in The United States with the last name Burns. In the most recent US census more than 160,000 instances of the surname Burns were recorded as living in The United States.
