Carrigan family crest
The Irish surname Carrigan is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Corragáin meaning “descendant of Corragán,” a double diminutive of corr meaning “pointed.” The Carrigans originated in the Ulster county of Fermanagh and were of the same stock as the Maguires. The chieftains of these two septs joined forces with the powerful O' Neills of Tyrone and resisted Norman attempts to conquer Fermanagh in the 12th and 13th Centuries. Today there are more than 6,000 bearers of the last name Carrigan living in The United States.
