The Irish surname Cogley is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Coigligh meaning “descendant of Coigleach,” a name apparently representing a simplified form of coigealach meaning “like a distaff or an untidy person.” This was originally found in county Mayo in the west of Ireland but today is most numerous in counties Sligo and Donegal.
