COLQUHOUN CLAN CREST

The Scottish surname Colquhoun is an habitational name from the barony of Colquhoun in Dumbartonshire. The name appears to derive from Gaelic còil, cùil ‘nook’, ‘corner’, or coill(e) ‘wood’ and cumhann ‘narrow’. In the 13th century Maol Domhnaich, Earl of Lennox granted the lands of Colquhoun to Humphry de Kilpatrick. Humphry’s son, Ingelram de Colquhoun, who lived in the reign of Alexander III, was the first person recorded as taking Colquhoun as a surname. Around 1368, Luss, on Loch Lomond, was acquired by Sir Robert Colquhoun through marriage. From then on the chiefship has been described as of Colquhoun and Luss. A Notable bearer of the name was the 20th  Century British Surrealist painter Ithell Colquhoun. Today there are 600 bearers of the last name Colquhoun living in The United States.
