The Irish surname Conroy is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó Conraoi “descendant of Cú Raoi,” a name meaning “hound of the plain.” The Conroy's were the hereditary poets and chroniclers to the Kings of Connaught. The name is most frequesntly found in county Laois, Galway and Mayo. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1806 when Dennis James Conroy arrived in New York. Today there are approximately 16,000 bearers of the surname Conroy living in the US.
