When found in Ireland the name Davenport is found in county Tipperary and was adopted by bearers of Munster Gaelic Ó Donndubhartaigh meaning “descendant of Donndubhartach,” a personal name composed of the elements donn meaning “brown-haired man or chieftain” and  dubh meaning “black” and  artach meaning ‘nobleman.” The name is first recorded in 1162 when Richard de Deveneport is recorded in the "Pipe Rolls of Cheshire." The first record of the name Davenport in the New World is in 1628 when Richard Davenport arrived in Salem Massachusetts. Today there are approximately 55,000 bearers of the name Davenport in the US.
