dicke “thicket”) or “ a dweller by the dike” (Middle Low German dik  “dike.”) The name is first recorded in the province of Saxony in the 14th Century. Early references to the name in the United States include Adolph Dickmann who arrived in New Orleans, Louisana in 1849 and Caroline Dickmann, also to New Orleans in 1851. Today there are approximately 800 bearers of the name Dickmann in the United States.
