The French surname Dion is an habitational name from any of various places called Dion and Dionne, all apparently derived from a Gaulish element divon meaning “sacred spring.” The name is first found in the region of Auvergne, and there is a town called Dienne there which has the same origin. In the New World an early record is that of John Dion who settled in Barbados in 1654 and Bazille Dion immigrated to New York in 1763. Today in the United States there are 8,000 bearers of the name Dion and 6,000 of the name Dionne.
