The English, Irish, and Welsh surname Drake is derived from the Old English byname Draca, meaning “snake or dragon.” The name is ultimately derived  from the Latin term draco meaning “snake, or monster.” The earliest written record of the name dates to 1086 when Leuing Drache is registered in the Domesday Book of Hampshire, England. The first recording of the name in the New World is in 1620 when Thomas Drake arrived in Massachusetts from England. Today there are  approximately 60,000 bearers of the name Drake living in the US.
