DUNBAR CLAN CREST

The Scottish surname Dunbar is an habitational name from Dunbar, a place on the North Sea coast near Edinburgh, derived from the Gaelic terms dùn meaning “ a fort” and barr meaning “ top, or summit.” The surname derives from Earl Gospatric of Northumberland, in the late 11th Century, whose grandfather was the lay abbott of Dunkeld. The clan Dunbar held considerable estates in Wigtownshire in the Scottish Borderlands in the 14th Century and also in Caithness in the 15th Century. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1650 when William Dunbar settled in Virginia. Today there are approximately 25,000 bearers of the name Dunbar living in the US.
