The Scottish and Irish surname Farquharson, from Aberdeenshire, is a reduced anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac Fhearchair meaning “son of Fearchar,” a personal name composed of the elements fear meaning “man” and car meaning “beloved.” Ferchart was the father of Fergus, one of the perambulators of boundaries in a Newbattle charter, circa 1178. Farhard, "judex de Buchan", witnessed a charter by William umyn, earl of Buchan, circa 1200. One Ferkar was earl of Ross from 1224 - 1230, and Macbeth filius Ferchware is recorded in 1283. The surname is also found in County Down, Ireland, where it was introduced by 17th Century Scottish settlers. The name is first found in the New World in 1716 when Harry Farquharson arrived in Virginia. Today there are approximately 1500 bearers of the name Farquharson living in the US.
