Furlong Family Crest

Furlong Family CrestThe English and Irish surname Furlong is a a topographic name from the Middle English term furlong meaning “ the length of a field” (from Old English furh ‘furrow’ + lang ‘long’), the technical term for the block of strips owned by several different persons which formed the unit of cultivation in the medieval open-field system of farming, or a habitational name from a minor place named with this word, such as Furlong in Devon or Shropshire. The surname is now chiefly found in Ireland, where a family of this name settled at the end of the 13th century. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Robert Furlang, which was dated 1242, the Fees Rolls of the county of Devon. Today the name is found chiefly in county Wexford in the southeast of Ireland where an Anglo Norman family of the name settled in the 13th Century. Today there are approximately 6,500 people living in The United States with the surname Furlong.
