The English surname Gentry is of nickname origin, derived from the Middle English, Old French term genterie meaning “nobility of birth or character.” The first recorded reerence to the name is in 1202 when Osbert le Gentil, is registered in “ The pipe rolls of Hampshire.” John Gentry was a witness at St Peters Church, Cornhill, on February 29th 1684, and John Guntrey, a witness at St Dunstans in the East, Stepney, on March 15th 1689. The name was brought to the New World in 1700 when immigration records record the arrival of Nicholas Gentry in Virginia.
