Hammond Family Crest

The English surname Hammond, also found in Ireland is an Anglo-Norman from a personal name, Hamo, which is generally from a continental Germanic name Haimo, a short form of various compound names beginning with haim ‘home’, although it could also be from the Old Norse personal name Hámundr, composed of the elements hár ‘high’ + mund ‘protection’. The name is first recorded in 1242 when Walter Hamund was registered in the Free Rolls of Herefordshire. Additional records of the name include Richard Hamond of Sussex in the Subsidy Tax rolls of 1332, John Hammond who died in 1617 was physician to King James 1st of England VI of Scotland (1603 – 1625.)
