The personal name Herbert is composed of the Germanic elements heri, hari   meaning “army” and  berth meaning “ bright, or famous.” A notable bearer of the name Hebert is the accomplished French geologist  Edmond Hébert. Born on June 12th 1812 He was elected a member of the Academie des Science in 1877, Commander of the Legion of Honour in 1885, and he was three times president of the  Geological Society of France. Edmond died in Paris on 4 April 1890.
