Hegarty Family Crest
The Irish surname Hegarty is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Ó hÉigceartaigh meaning “descendant of Éigceartach,” a byname meaning “unjust.” The name Hegarty is very numerous in counties Cork, Derry, Donegal and Mayo.The family were a sept of Cineál Eoghain in Derry. There was another group, a branch of the Eoghanacht who were the ruling group in county Cork. Notable bearers of the name were Lt.-Col Hegarty of Lally's Regiment, who, in 1747, was rewarded for his service by Louis XV of France, and Peter O'Hegarty who was made Governor of the Isle of Bourbon.
