In heraldry, the border, more properly called a bordure, is a symbol of difference, protection, distinction, and lineage, forming a surrounding band that frames the shield and gives it added emphasis. As one of the principal ordinaries of heraldry, the bordure often serves both a visual and genealogical purpose, marking a branch of a family, indicating cadency, or distinguishing one set of arms from another while preserving the connection between them.

It can also suggest enclosure and defence, since it surrounds and contains the central field, giving it a secondary association with protection and completeness. Bordures are widely used across British and European heraldry and are especially important in systems where family relationships and inheritance were expressed through subtle variations in armorial design. Their tincture and treatment, whether plain, engrailed, compony, or otherwise varied, can add further meaning or simply strengthen the individuality of the arms.
