In heraldry, a housemark is a personal, family, or property sign made from simple lines, often resembling a merchant’s mark, rune, monogram, or abstract geometric device. Its meaning is rooted less in medieval chivalry than in ownership, identity, trade, inheritance, and local continuity. Housemarks were used to mark goods, seals, tools, buildings, boundary stones, and documents, making them practical signs of recognition long before or alongside formal coats of arms. When adopted into heraldry, a housemark often symbolizes an old family presence, mercantile activity, civic standing, or the right to possess and transmit property.

Housemarks are especially important in German, Scandinavian, Baltic, Dutch, and Scottish burghal traditions, where merchants, craftsmen, farmers, and townspeople used them as recognizable hereditary signs. They could function much like arms for people outside the knightly class, and in some regions they were later incorporated into shields as charges. In German heraldry they are often called Hausmarken, while in merchant contexts they are closely related to marks used in trade and shipping. Their angular forms were well suited to carving into wood, stone, wax, or metal, which explains their practical design and their frequent appearance in civic and family records.

Because housemarks are abstract, their symbolism usually depends on family tradition rather than a fixed universal meaning. A particular mark may represent a household, workshop, shipowner, farmstead, or line of descent.
