Hopkins Family Crest
The English surname Hopkins, also found in Ireland and Wales, is a patronymic name derived from the first name Hopkin (a medieval form of Robert). The surname is widespread throughout southern and central England, but is at its most common in South Wales. When found in Ireland the name Hopkins is an anglicized form of the Gaelic surname Mac Oibicín, and is principally found in county Longford and the west of Ireland. Early recordings of the name include Nicholas Hobekyn of the county of Cambridge in the Hundred Rolls of England in 1273, Rychard Hobbekynessone in the Putnam rolls of Cheshire in 1354, and Walter Hopkin of Warton, in the wills record of Lancaster in 1563.
