KINCAID CLAN CREST

The Scottish surname Kincaid is an habitational name from a place near Lennoxtown, north of Glasgow, which is first recorded in 1238 as Kincaith and in 1250 as Kincathe. The name is derived from the Gaelic terms ceann meaning “head” and  càithe meaning “pass.” The earliest mention of a Kincaid is Robert of Kincade who served on an inquest held at Stirling on 2 October 1425 which found Sir John of Halden, knight, heir to the deceased Sir Bernard of Halden, knight, his father, in the 10 merk lands of Kepdowry and Ardas in the sheriffdom of Stirling and earldom of Lennox. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1685 when John Kincaid settled in New Jersey. Today there are approximately 18,000 bearers of the name Kincaid living in the United States.
