The Scottish surname MacDonald, also found in Ireland, is of patronymic origin being derived from an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac Dhomhnuill, from the personal name Domhnall, which is composed of the ancient Celtic elements domno meaning “world” and val “might, or rule.” Thus the name means literally “The son of the world ruler." The Norse-Gaelic Clan MacDonald traces its descent from Domhnall MacRaghnuill (d. circa 1250), whose father Reginald was styled "King of the Isles" and "Lord of Argyll and Kintyre".Ranald's father, Somerled was styled "King of the Hebrides", and was killed campaigning against Malcolm IV of Scotland at the Battle of Renfrew in 1164.
