The Scottish surname MacIntyre, also found in Ireland, is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac an tSaoir meaning “son of the craftsman.” The MacIntyre’s originally hailed from the Hebridies islands and later settled in the area around Kintyre which was controlled by clan MacDonald. The name was brought to Ireland by 17th Century Scottish settlers and is found in the northeast of the country. The name is first recorded in the New World in 1650 when Phillip MacIntyre arrived in Massachusetts Today there are approximately 3,000 bearers of the name McIntyre living in the United States.
