MacKinnon family crest
The Scottish surname MacKinnon is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Mac Fhionghuin, a patronymic from a Gaelic personal name meaning “fair born, or fair son.” It is also translated as Love, and has been taken as being from Gaelic Mac Ionmhuinn meaning “son of the beloved one.” The MacKinnon Clan was originally associated with the Isles of Skye and Iona. Daniel MacKinnon, born in 1781, was wounded at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, and in 1830 appointed Colonel of the regiment. He was related to Sir William MacKinnon (1823 - 1893), founder of the British East Africa Company, in 1885. Today there are approximately 4,000 bearers of the surname MacKinnon living in the United States.
