MacLellan Family CrestThe Scottish and northern Irish surname MacLellan is an anglicized form of the Gaelic Mac Gille Fhaolain (Scottish) and Mac Giolla Fhaoláin (Irish) meaning “son of the servant of (Saint) Faolán.” The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Patrick M'Lolane. This was dated 1306, when in support of the Interregnum Government of Scotland lead by John Baliol, he captured the castle of Dumfries from the followers of King Robert, known as The Bruce, 1306 - 1329.The name is first recorded in the New World in 1745 when Donald MacLellan is recorded in Barbados. Today there are approximately 1,000 bearers of the name MacLellan living in the US.
