McClellan Family CrestThe Scottish and northern Irish surname McClellan is an anglicized form of the Gaelic Mac Gille Fhaolain (Scottish) and Mac Giolla Fhaoláin (Irish) meaning “son of the servant of (Saint) Faolán.” The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Patrick M'Lolane. This was dated 1306, when in support of the Interregnum Government of Scotland lead by John Baliol, he captured the castle of Dumfries from the followers of King Robert, known as The Bruce, 1306 - 1329.The name is first recorded in the New World in 1718 when James McClellan is recorded in New England. Today there are approximately 25,000 bearers of the name McClellan living in the US.
