McLelland Family Crest
The Scottish and northern Irish surname McLelland is an anglicized form of the Gaelic Mac Gille Fhaolain (Scottish) and Mac Giolla Fhaoláin (Irish) meaning “son of the servant of (Saint) Faolán.” The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Patrick M'Lolane. This was dated 1306, when in support of the Interregnum Government of Scotland lead by John Baliol, he captured the castle of Dumfries from the followers of King Robert, known as The Bruce, 1306 - 1329.The name is first recorded in the New World in 1772 when Charles McLelland is recorded in South Carolina. Today there are 1,600 bearers of the name McLelland living in the US.
