The Scottish surname McNicholas, also found in Ireland, is derived from the personal name Nicholas from the Greek Nikolaos, from nikan ‘to conquer’ and laos ‘people.’ The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Waleram Nicholai, which was dated 1198, in the "Curia Regis Rolls of Suffolk." The name is first recorded in the New World in 1831 when James McNicholas is recorded in Indiana. Today there are approximately 2,000 bearers of the surname McNicholas living in the United States.
