The German and Dutch surname Meyer is derived from the Middle High German term meier, a status name for a steward, bailiff, or overseer, which later came to be used also to denote a tenant farmer. Originally it denoted a village headman (ultimately from Latin maior meaning “greater or superior.” A notable bearer of the name Meyer is Bernhard Meyer the noted 18th Century German physician and naturalist. Bernhard was born on the 24th of August 1767 and he died on the 1st of January 1836. Bernhard Meyer was the co-author of Oekonomisch-technische Flora der Wetterau (1799), which was the source of the modern scientific name of many plants. His co-authors were Phillip Gottfried Gaertner and Johannes Scherbius.
